The Bagua is one of the most recognizable diagrams associated with Feng Shui, but it is also one of the most frequently oversimplified. Online diagrams often present a nine-box grid that can simply be placed over any floor plan. Historically, the subject is more complex.
Bagua means “eight trigrams”. The eight trigrams come from Chinese cosmological traditions and are associated with patterns of change, directions, family relationships and natural phenomena.
What is a Bagua map?
In Feng Shui, the Bagua provides a framework for relating directions and spatial sectors to the eight trigrams. A central area is often added in modern nine-sector diagrams, producing the familiar three-by-three grid.

The eight directions
Traditional directional Bagua arrangements associate the trigrams with compass sectors. The exact conceptual framework depends on whether one is discussing Earlier Heaven or Later Heaven arrangements and on the Feng Shui method being used.
This is why a Bagua should not be treated merely as a decorative grid.
Why are there different Bagua maps online?
Because different modern Feng Shui schools apply the concept differently. Compass-oriented approaches normally relate sectors to actual directions. Some modern Western methods instead align a nine-sector map with the entrance wall of a room or building.
Those methods should not be silently mixed. Before using a Bagua map, identify which system the instructions belong to.
How to use a compass-based Bagua
- Identify the method you intend to use.
- Establish the relevant orientation of the building or space.
- Take compass measurements carefully and away from obvious sources of interference when possible.
- Relate directional sectors to the appropriate Bagua framework.
- Interpret the sectors together with actual form, use and surrounding environment.
More advanced systems may add time, building construction data and other calculations.
What are the nine life areas?
Many modern Bagua maps label sectors with themes such as career, knowledge, family, wealth, fame, relationships, children, helpful people and a center. These labels are especially familiar in contemporary Western Feng Shui.
They can be useful for understanding that tradition, but they should not be presented as the only historical form of Bagua practice.
Bagua and the Five Elements
The trigrams and directions have relationships with the Five Phases. This is one reason colors, materials and forms become associated with different sectors in modern Feng Shui advice.
The Five Phases describe patterns of relationship and transformation; they are not simply five decorative substances to distribute around a house.
Bagua and Yin and Yang
Each trigram consists of three broken or unbroken lines, conventionally associated with Yin and Yang. The Bagua therefore emerges from a broader cosmological language of polarity and change. See Yin and Yang.
Can I put a Bagua over one room?
Some modern schools apply a Bagua to an entire property, a building, a floor or an individual room. Other traditions approach spatial analysis differently. Consistency within the chosen method is more important than combining every technique found online.
Do missing corners mean something bad will happen?
Irregular floor plans are often analyzed in terms of missing or extended sectors, especially in modern Bagua practice. Such interpretations are traditional symbolic frameworks, not reliable predictions of illness, relationship failure or financial loss.
Architecture should first be evaluated for actual issues such as daylight, ventilation, circulation, privacy and usability.

Which way do I orient a Feng Shui Bagua map?
It depends on the school. Compass-based approaches use direction, while some modern Western systems align the map to the entrance. Do not mix the two without understanding the methodological difference.
Is the wealth corner always the southeast?
In common Later-Heaven directional associations, southeast is connected with Xun and is often labeled wealth or prosperity in modern maps. Entrance-aligned systems may locate the corresponding area differently.
Do I need a compass?
For a compass-based method, yes. Entrance-aligned modern methods use a different reference system.
Can the Bagua predict my future?
Chibagua does not present Bagua analysis as a scientifically validated predictive method. It is best understood within the historical and cultural frameworks of Feng Shui.
